Wherever you are in the world I can promise you I know the most stressful part of travelling, 100% of the time, without a doubt. MONEY.

I mean packing and the actual travelling (overnight buses, sleeping in airports, hitchhiking) part definitely make the list, but budget, money and it’s restrictions will always be number one.

The very nature of travellers is always to want to do more, see more, explore more, eat more and yes….drink more and this is very hard on a backpacking budget.

Buried in that money problem is knowing how something is worth and how much converts to what. Well here I’m going to give you a FREE TRAVEL HACK and this one is perfect for budgeting in the said country you’re in.

But don’t worry, we have done all the hard work for you.

But if you have clicked on the link you can see, it tells you the price from a chicken breast in the market to a mid-range meal for 2. It’s perfect!

Now, I’m going to get back to that shortly and while you carry on being impressed by the wonders of that site, I’m going to impress you once more before revisiting that site and subject and impressing again. A lot of promising to impress here isn’t there?

The current minimum wage in Australia is $19.49AUD, which is actually the highest minimum wage in the world!

That’s the equivalent of:

Impressive. Very impressive when the minimum in those countries (for peopled aged 21 and over) are:

Now lets remember, that’s the MINIMUM. You could be earning higher.

So let’s look at what does that actually get you per hour of work?

People often use the Big Mac method, how many minutes/hours do you have to work for a Big Mac in your country. We’d use that but we’re WAY above comparing against McDonald’s… ONLY JOKING, here I am doing the breakdown.

So now let’s look at a beer🍺. How many minutes on minimum wage do you have to work for a beer in your country?

We’ve gone with Melbourne in Australia and the major cities of each country to make it fair.

0.5 Litres Of Domestic Beer

So out of all 5 comparisons only one country comes close to beating Australia and that’s Germany…and we all know how much they love their beer.

Date Night

Want to take someone out on a date on your travels? No worries. A 3 course meal for 2 at a mid range restaurant we’re talking:

Gym Time

Want to keep fit while travelling? Let’s look at a gym price for one month:

Have you noticed a trend yet? This is pretty damn good isn’t it? Well not if you’re American.

Now all of these prices are based on not just anywhere in Australia either, they’re based on the prices of Melbourne, the 2nd most liveable City in the World. This is probably one of the reasons why I imagine?

Not only is there the monetary value and benefits to travelling, you’re naturally going to grow as a person too. You’re going out of your comfort zone, you’re experiencing new things, meeting new people, trying new things and growing as person daily. It’s an absolute win-win.

So tell me folks, after your long day at work today.

Where would you rather be on minimum wage? At home, or on a working holiday in a place where every weekend feels like a break and the beaches look like this?

Silly question right?

Backpacker Economics: Saving Tips For Your Big Trip…

You’ve booked your flights, you’ve bought your journal and you’ve started writing your bucket list for your travelling adventure. It’s then that it hits you, ‘THIS IS REAL AND I NEED TO SAVE SOME MONEY’.

Sure you can grab the odd lift and get lucky on a mega-cheap flight, but there’s nothing worse than having to skimp on everything on your travels and something we all need before we set off on the road is a chunk of moolah.

Here are several tips to save BEFORE your trip:

1) Work Out A Weekly Savings Target & Transfer Weekly

Yes it is nerdy but if you’ve planned some travelling, chances are you know roughly what you get paid each week (tell me you have a job?!) and you can do some estimations.

Work out what you need for rent, bills, food and leave a bit for a weekly treat (someone’s birthday meal out etc) and SAVE the rest. The best way to do this is to have it automatically come out and straight in to a different account that you don’t touch! Sure life may seem quiet for a bit but remember you’ll be having the last laugh when you’re drinking from a coconut and uploading your #nofilter beach shots.

Added tip: Inspire yourself with photos of your destinations all over the place. It could be your wall, screensaver, bedside cabinet or phone background, motivate yourself to save!

2) Plan Your Food For The Week & Don’t Eat Out…

I’m not saying you need to plan everything you eat for the entire week but the better you get at planning your meals, the more you’ll save. You can still eat well, just make sure you’re the one cooking it, not the local restaurant.

My tip would be to plan your lunches and dinners for the week and do a Sunday shop for all of it. Get Monday/Tues/Weds lunches made Sunday night and cook your dinner each night. To be even smarter (and if you’re disciplined to not eat it all straight off!) make a big dinner and take left overs for lunch each day, cheaper again!

Added Tip: If you’re a snacker then buy a bag of nuts and portion them out so you have one each day, or even each morning and afternoon, whatever you need to fill you up and stop you going to the vending machine or corner shop!

Estimated 6 month Saving: $50 per week for 6 months=$1200

3) Get A Cheeky Second Job

If you’re purely saving and trying to cut back on the social spends, then why not fill 2/3 nights with another job? I’m not saying work every waking hour but if you can pick up a shift 3 nights a week and you weren’t doing anything anyway, then why wouldn’t you?! 15 hours a week could be another $300 per week, that soon adds up!

Added Tip: Go in and see your local bars, cafes and restaurants and ask if they need anyone. Don’t e-mail your CV because by the time they get to it, they’ve given the job to the person that walked in! Also, retail stores often need evening high season staff.

Estimated 6 month Saving: $200 (post tax) a week=$4800

4) Get on Upwork/Fiver/99Things

Do you have a passion for something you’d perhaps like to do one day? Do you have a talent that you’re not making the most of? Are you a keen blogger, video editor or maybe audio engineer?

If yes, then this is your year as there’s several websites that are basically an open skill set sharing forum. Someone needs 5 videos editing by next week, you love editing but are not a pro so can offer a knock down price. Drop them a message, get on it and spend the profits on a month of Pad Thai.

Added Tip:Work for a lower rate first, build up your profile and then you can charge more for your time!

Estimated 6 month Saving: 1 job a month @ $150=$900

5) Sell Your Shit….

Ok so this may seem desperate but what have you got to lose? Do you have a load of things you look at every day and wonder why it’s still hanging around in your room?

We all have clothes that would suit anyone but us, or that we bought and now regret? You’re looking at those green chinos now aren’t you? If so, then let’s get rid of them. If you’re not wearing them then any money is good money! Get them on e-bay, Gumtree or even Amazon depending what it is, you’ve got nothing to lose!

Added Tip: Why not do a good ol’ fashioned car boot sale? I heard that, yes, they absolutely are such a thing! Take all your stuff, give it a go and then anything you don’t get rid of you can then get on eBay, Gumtree and Amazon!

Estimated 6 month Saving: One clear out of stuff=$300

6) Cut Your Monthlys…

Ok so this can be a tough one and I totally get it. And let’s not be silly I know you need your contact lens prescription and we’ll let you have electricity, water and gas, but what don’t you NEED?

What would you rather do, skydive on your travels or have the luxury of being able to press skip on your Spotify? If you answered the second one then I can only hope you’re scared of heights, as it’s the only logical explanation!

Seriously, we love Spotify, Stan, Netflix and various other luxuries of hibernating but do we NEED it for the next few months? Na, no we don’t.

Added Tip: If you have cable TV or an oversized phone or home internet package then even look at scaling that back too. Definitely look at cutting it altogether (if you’re not in a contract) for when you’re away, you don’t need that extra outgoings when you’re gone!

Estimated 6 month Saving: $50 per month=$300

7) Cut Your Daily Coffee, Or At Least Your Second One…

I can sense the genuine fear at the mere thought of working without coffee. Will you be able to make it to 11am? Will you murder a colleague? Will your body shut down at 2pm never to restart again?

I’m going to say all of those will feel close for the first week but after that you’ll be a convert (or in jail) and once you are you’ll be delighted you made the change.

Added Tip: Of course you don’t have to work without caffeine! Take a Keep cup of home coffee or take advantage of the tea and coffee supply at work!

Estimated 6 month Saving: 1 $4 coffee a day, 5 days a week for 26 weeks=$520 (THAT’S A SCARY FIGURE ISN’T IT.)

8) Get A Money Jar…

The more we spend on card the more redundant this becomes, but trust me it’s still a winner. If you put your change in your jar every night for 6 months, it soon adds up.

Added Tip: Don’t get a jar but get a tin you need to open with a tin opener. Why you ask? So you can’t get in to it every time you need some change!

Estimated 6 month Saving: $50 per month=$250

9) Cut The Big Weekly Night Out

Have you always lived for the weekend? Are you the guy that gets the shots in? Or the one that’ still drinking when everyone else just wants to get a kebab?

It’s time to think that one more gin and tonic in your hometown could be four drinks wherever you’re going, or even half a drink depending where you’re going.

Either way you’re going to need every last dollar you have and clever pre-drinking or going out on special/student nights only will become your new thing, or even better? Maybe lay off the binge for a good few weeks?

Added Tip: This is made easier if your second job means you work Friday or Saturday evenings. Be on the  other side of the bar earning the money, not spending it.

Estimated 6 month Saving: $100 night a week saved=$2600

Potential Total Estimated Savings: $10,870

How f$*#in cool does that sound?

You can go travelling with $10,870 by just being a bit smarter every week for half a year, and that’s all extra savings as that’s before the absolute number one saving tip of the weekly savings target.

Which of course is totally dependent on your income, but even if you could save $200 a week there then you’re talking an extra $5200 which takes you over the $16,000 mark.

There’s no need to thank me, no honestly, seriously, don’t worry about it’s fine

TOP 5 BACKPACKING DATE NIGHTS IN MELBOURNE

So you’ve made eye contact across the free breakfast, engaged in lackluster conversation when entering the dorm and now you’ve even passed each other in the corridor. The time is now – ask them out.

It’s hard to know what to do and where is good to go on a date when travelling. You also don’t want to break the bank! Well, it’s a good job that the Welcome to Travel team are real-life romantic heroes then isn’t it?

Take a look at these.

St Kilda Penguins

Surely this is an absolute winner? These lovely little creatures only come out at sunset meaning you’re going to have to see them after a romantic stroll along the promenade watching an epic St Kilda sunset. When you’re done, you can swing a left up the pier and take a look at these little fellas.

It’s SUNSET and WILDLIFE. If your date doesn’t like this then it’s probably worth just giving them the boot….

Picnic on Herring Island

Grab the cheese, quince paste and crackers because we’re going for a picnic darling…

I’ve been here 7 years (yes I’m that old, hard to believe right?!) and only heard about Herring Island a few weeks back, so what is it?

Well, it’s a tiny but picturesque island consisting of cute gardens dotted with some pretty impressive sculptures made purely from natural materials. It also has an all-important picnic area. It’s as if they knew you were coming!

Here you are: thoughtful, in the know, cool and well researched… oh you’re everything I want, just take me now!

NOTE: Ferry is $2 (your shout remember!). The punt leaves from Como Landing (Melways ref Map 58, G2). Car parking is available on Alexandra Ave.

It only leaves Sat/Sun and public holidays between 11am-5pm.

Dumplings

Grabbing those delicate little balls (not those ones!) of joy that we call dumplings is well and truly part of the Melbourne way. It’s not a big thing but something that’s just done at the drop of a hat as a Melbourne norm.

So that’s why suggesting a dumpling bar down a random laneway is a f*%$ing cool thing to do for a first date. You look like you’re the happening, in the know kid and your suggestion is just you throwing out another one of your regular haunts. Go one step further and pretend you know the waiter. Don’t get too cocky though, it gets awkward when you try speaking Mandarin. Try Empress of China or China Red for some firm favourites of ours.

Comedy Club

This is pretty old school but it’s a good icebreaker for sure. It’s the cooler, more mature and less awkward version of going to the cinema. It should be a funny night and they’re often in bars you never knew or in parts of town you were unaware of. I didn’t even realise until writing this, the Comedy Club is a real door opener isn’t it? It’s the gateway drug to being a more-well versed socialite.

Personal recommendations includ Spleen (Bourke St, CBD), The Local (Carlisle St, St Kilda East) and North Melbourne Comics Lounge.

2-for-1 Cocktails at Pablo Honey

Maybe some would say there’s something a bit tacky about taking a first date to somewhere for a 2-for-1 deal and that would be right if you were taking them to Subway or 7/11 for a coffee. I reckon it’s more than acceptable when it’s a rather fancy establishment offering high quality goods, and that’s what Pablo Honey does, just at the bottom of Acland St. It’s got an outrageously long list of impressive cocktails and they’re 2-for-1 from 4pm-7pm, Mon-Fri.

Now you know it’s at the bottom of Acland St yeah? You know what’s close yeah? And then you know what’s also close yeah? That’s right, finish the cocktail (last order at 6.59pm, every time!), head to the promenade for sunset and walk to the penguins for ultimate date success.

Ohhhh you’ve done it, you’ve nailed the date with TWO of these non-bank-busting ideas.

Be careful though, you’re setting the bar very high here…
